As a result of the faithful lay labors and revival between January to December 1979,
over 300 souls were baptized and divided between First, Central, and Oakwood
University churches. Two hundred people formed the Mt. Calvary Church on
September 15, 1979, meeting first in the Calvary Hill Center on Fairbanks Street. Bro.
Thomas “Big Daddy” Hartsfield accepted the 3rd Angel message from Elder Ward’s
leadership and became the brick mason contractor for Mt. Calvary. Elder Dreadsie
James (DJ) Dixon served as Associate Pastor for 14 years and was actively engaged in
the Sabbath School teaching and counsel to the members. Several charter members
from the First and Oakwood church joined Mt. Calvary to aid in its growth.
In December 1982, the first fulltime pastor of the newly organized church was Pastor
Franklin S. Hill and his wife Lucile. Under his leadership, Mt. Calvary made
substantial progress in paying down the mortgage; adding a strong divider, separating
the sanctuary from what was then the multi-purpose area, as well as other general
improvements to the property. The theme of his life and leadership was “In the
Master Service”.
Pastor Melwin Bob Mounter became the second Shepherd of the Mt. Calvary flock
with his wife Carolyn. Under his pastorate, the membership grew, major renovation
of the pulpit was completed, and the community service outreach was initiated. The
former multi-purpose room was converted to part of the sanctuary use and our “E. C.
Ward Fellowship Hall/Gym” was added, increasing the church property to
approximately $2,000,000. Pastor Mounter’s theme was “From Vision to Victory.”
Pastor Antoine Maycock was welcomed as the shepherd of this flock on September
11, 1998. He and his wife Connie, initiated the soul winning outreach program in the
church community, leading the members to knock on doors, get acquainted with the
neighbors, take prayer requests, and provide needed services. Pastor Maycock
exemplified leadership as he followed the footprints of Jesus. Along with his humble
spirit and love for others, he utilized his gift of carpentry and outwardly expressed his
love of Christian education which blessed many.
Pastor Hector and Mrs. Inola Mouzon became the interim pastor and first lady in
2004. His leadership experience and spiritual commitment was a blessing to the entire
congregation.
Elder Richard Stevenson became the interim leader in 2004-2005, when the
congregation was without a fulltime pastor. His leadership skill was well respected,
and his spiritual endowment and foresight served the church well. Under God’s
divine guidance, the church pressed on unified and committed to Christ, His cross, His
commandments, and His coming again.
In July 2005, Pastor Vincent White was appointed as the Pastor and was welcomed to
the congregation. He and his devoted wife Audrey provided effective spiritual
leadership. Under his administration and leadership, the departmental structure of the
church was revitalized, and soul winning emphasis and outreach enhanced and
enriched the worship service with a fruitful ministry.
Elder Auldwin Humphrey was assigned as Interim Pastor, serving in this capacity
during 2008. His strong spiritual zeal and enthusiastic personality welcomed him
quickly to the Mt. Calvary congregation. His charming wife, Adele, and family joined
him. In the summer of 2009, he established the evangelistic theme “Word of
Knowledge Bible College” Evangelistic crusade. His spiritual vitality focused on
family, prayer, and souls.
Pastor Marcel Wip, and wife Irene, received the mantle as Mt. Calvary’s new
shepherd in 2008. Pastor Wip brought broad experience in evangelism, counseling,
and pastoring. He emphasized prayer by setting up a prayer tent in front of the church
for the community to receive immediate prayer from many of the church members on
a rotational basis. Pastor Wip also brought a wealth of professional experience to the
fellowship as a licensed therapist specializing in relationships. His mission was
“Kingdom Building”.
Pastor Rupert Bushner and wife, Jo Ann, became the shepherd in 2013. Pastor and
Mrs. Bushner loving spirits and joint team effort brought to the congregation love for
families and an example that encouraged the church. His powerful gift of speaking
was always welcomed. Evangelism was a passion for Pastor Bushner. In 2017, a three
week of the system for survival in the 21st century evangelistic series was truly a
blessing to the church family. An addition of 100 precious souls were added to the
kingdom of God and our congregation. His theme was “New life begins at Calvary”.
In 2013, Pastor James Lewis, and wife, Sharon, was welcomed as the Associate
pastor during Pastor Bushner’s term. Pastor Lewis has enhanced the church with his
financial and wealth of knowledge as a former SDA conference President/Pastor that
is still a blessing today.
Pastor Willie L. Taylor and his wife Vickie is our current shepherd since August
2013. As the Senior Pastor, his strategic mission theme is “Moving from friendship, to
membership, to fellowship, to discipleship”. Under Pastor Taylor’s leadership, he has
implemented the edification and proclamation concept, major renovation projects
have been completed in Phase 1 (new sign, carpet, wood rostrum, two rear bathrooms
redone) and Phase 2 is in progress for the exterior and lobby interior renovations.
Pastor Taylor’s wealth of knowledge and administrative skills as a former SDA
conference President/Pastor is beneficial to the church progress today. His wife,
Vickie, is involved with the community service center and provides great interior
decorating vice as a building committee team member. Our current logo is “New
Heights begin at Calvary”
Pastor, Khaleel Clarke, joined the pastoral team in March 2021. He brought high
energy, powerful speaking gift, and worked with the youth and young adults. His
initiative of community soul winning outreach program and LOUD concept was
beneficial to the church. He recently married Dominique and she was a blessing to
our church. They recently moved to Mississippi to shepherd the Ephesus SDA Church
in Meridian, Mississippi. We are praying for them and their transition.
On December 18, 1982, Pastor Ward led a congregational procession from the Royal
Funeral Home, crossing the streets along Jordan Lane and arriving at the beautiful
edifice on Meadow Drive. Many great shepherds have served and did a great job.
Today, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we rejoice at the great things God has
done, and we say, “To God Be the Glory.”
